GOP wants O to return 500G in Corzine dough

Now this is rich.

Republican leaders called on President Obama to return $500,000 that scandal-scarred Jon Corzine helped raise for his re-election campaign.

The Wall Street firm that Corzine headed, MF Global, collapsed Monday amid federal probes of more than a half-billion dollars in missing funds.

Corzine, the former New Jersey governor and US senator who once headed Goldman Sachs, was even mentioned as a potential treasury secretary if Obama wins a second term.

“In light of the FBI investigation into Jon Corzine’s company, President Obama should immediately return the $500,000 that Corzine raised on his behalf,” said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

The Obama camp said it would return $5,000 Corzine contributed personally, if he’s convicted of wrongdoing. But it did not say it would return the $500,000 Corzine “bundled” from other fat cats. He hosted a $35,800 per-head fund-raiser for Obama in April.

GOP officials delighted in linking the populist-talking Obama to Corzine.

“President Obama is fond of proclaiming that his campaign is funded by ‘ordinary Americans,’” Priebus said. “But ordinary Americans are not suspected of losing hundreds of millions of dollars of their customers’ money.”
