CHSAA Class A boys soccer playoff roundup: Blessed Sacrament continues resurgence into quarters

Blessed Sacrament’s boys soccer renaissance continues into the quarterfinals.

Danny Manz had two goals to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over Bishop Ford in the CHSAA Class A intersectional boys soccer first round on Tuesday. Blessed Sacrament (10-2-2), which has improved drastically in coach Nick Piacquadio’s first season, will host 2010 ‘A’ runner-up St. Joseph by the Sea in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Joe Oceguera also had a goal, his cousin Andres Oceguera had an assist and Oscar Licea added two assists for the Cardinals. Ford finishes 3-6-5.

Cardinal Hayes 4, Cathedral Prep 1: Ricardo Reid had two goals and Marco Ramirez and Wayne Bowden each added goals for Hayes (9-1-5), which hosts Cardinal Spellman in the quarterfinals on a date yet to be determined. The game was played at Randall’s Island, because Hayes’ field was under snow, coach Paul Ellis said. Cathedral Prep finishes 2-11-2.

St. Joseph by the Sea 3, All Hallows 0: Justin Bommarito had two goals and Ryan Griffo scored for Sea (8-1-6), which travels to Blessed Sacrament for the quarterfinals Thursday. Nick McLendon, Michael Cannizzaro and Francesco DiStefano each had assists. All Hallows finishes 3-8-3.

Monsignor McClancy 5, Sacred Heart 0: Matthew Scimemi, Sebastian Castano, Kevin Leon, Joey Mifsud and Michael Ferrara all scored for McClancy (11-2-2), which meets the St. Raymond/St. Edmund winner in the quarterfinals on a date to be determined. Ferrera and James Linehan both had assists. Sacred Heart finishes 0-14-0.

Notes: First-round games between Mount St. Michael and St. Agnes and St. Raymond and St. Edmund were both postponed due to poor field conditions. Mount-Agnes will be played Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and St. Ray’s/St. Edmund is set for Thursday at 3:30 p.m. … St. John’s Prep did not show for its first-round game against Cardinal Spellman and Spellman coach Tom Cabrera was not sure why as of Tuesday night. CHSAA Class A citywide commissioner Vinny Catapano said there would be an attempt to reschedule for Thursday.
