Brooklyn’s Di Fara Pizzeria remains shuttered after being deemed ‘health hazard’

This much-lauded Brooklyn pizza’s been deemed un-healthy.

Often called the city’s best slice joint, Di Fara Pizzeria on Avenue J in Midwood, remained closed yesterday after being shut down and deemed a “health hazard” by inspectors Nov. 16, who found mouse droppings throughout its kitchen among a slew of sanitary issues.

Run by pizza maestro Dom DeMarco for nearly five decades and known for its long lines, Di Fara was previously shuttered by the Health Department in 2007. It has historically fared poor in Health Department inspections, scoring 67 points Nov. 16 — more than double a failing grade.

Di Fara’s Facebook page blamed the closing on “personal matters,” and later said it’s “just a glitch in some paperwork bureaucracy with the [city’s] new grading system.”

The voice mail message at the pizzeria claimed it would re-open Nov. 22, but the Health Department today said it won’t green light any re-opening until the restaurant’s operators register for a food protection course and prove the violations have been corrected.
