Giants report card

OFFENSE D

Eli Manning was on target early but once again didn’t have much of a running game. He tossed a costly early interception under-throwing TE Jake Ballard. RB Brandon Jacobs scored and then got all silly with weak boxing celebration. Lost fumble won’t get rookie RB Da’Rel Scott more playing time. Great Fantasy Football showing for WR Victor Cruz.

DEFENSE F

What happens when you don’t pressure the quarterback or cover the receivers? You get blown out. No heat at all on torrid Drew Brees and no ability at all to hang with array of Saints targets. CB Aaron Ross was particularly ineffective. Run defense wasn’t good, either, trying to catch shifty Darren Sproles.

SPECIAL TEAMS C

Lawrence Tynes hit a 42-yard field goal and missed at halftime buzzer from 61 yards out. Steve Weatherford took off with a low snap on a fake punt and came up short of first down. Da’Rel Scott is promising on kickoff returns.

COACHING F

Tom Coughlin is going to have to answer for what seems like annual late-season blowout losses. The bloom is off the rose for defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, who had no answers for anything Saints threw at his defense. Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride — stop us if you heard this before — can’t find a running game.
