Grisly new search at Gilgo Beach

Police investigating the killings of 10 people whose bodies were found strewn along Long Island’s Gilgo Beach returned with cadaver dogs yesterday in hopes of finding evidence in their murders and signs of a still-missing New Jersey prostitute whose disappearance prompted the initial investigation.

About three dozen officers from the State Police and local police departments were searching seven specific sites along Ocean Parkway, said the Suffolk County Police Department, which is leading the investigation.

The department said information received in recent months prompted a return to the area, but officers had been waiting for the thick growth of pine trees and underbrush to clear before resuming the search.

The department offered no details on what the new information may be or its source.
