Slap at ‘lone killer’ theory

In a rare public rebuke, Suffolk County’s top law-enforcement official blasted the outgoing county police chief’s theory that there is a single Long Island serial killer.

District Attorney Thomas Spota said Police Commissioner Richard Dormer jumped the gun when he declared last month that one person was responsible for the grisly slaying of all 10 victims whose bodies were found along Gilgo Beach during the past year.

“The facts don’t bear out the single-killer theory,” he said. “We haven’t even identified all the victims.”

The stinging rebuke unfolded before the county legislature’s public-safety committee yesterday.

Spota noted that only five of the bodies had been identified. Also, there were major differences in the way the 10 corpses were disposed.

The first four bodies found were in burlap sacks but none of the others were, the DA said.
