Former Islanders GM Milbury denies assaulting 12-year-old hockey player

BOSTON — Former Islanders coach and GM Mike Milbury has been charged with assaulting a 12-year-old Pee Wee hockey player in Brookline.

Brookline police Capt. Tom Keaveney said Milbury was an assistant coach on his son’s team when he allegedly attacked an opposing player Dec. 9 at a town-owned rink.

Keaveney said Milbury will be summoned to court to face misdemeanor charges including assault and battery on a 12-year-old and threats to commit a crime.

But Milbury denied any assault. In a statement from his attorney, Milbury said he intervened in a fight between his son and another player, but no one was struck, injured or threatened.

Milbury, a defenseman, played parts of 12 seasons with the Bruins and later served as coach.
