Girls basketball roundup: Kennedy comes back for big win against Lewis

O’Neil Glenn accused his team of not being tough last week in a loss to Truman. He was singing a different tune Friday night.

John F. Kennedy came back from 13 points down in the third quarter to beat Francis Lewis, 49-46, in PSAL Class AA girls basketball in The Bronx. Leshauna Phinazee and Chelsea Custodio, two of the team’s key seniors, were playing the game with the flu.

“It was good, because we came back against a good team,” Glenn said.

Leshauna Phinazee had 14 points, Acklin had 11 points and Zakiya Mason added eight for Kennedy (8-4, 6-1 ‘AA’). Custodio had seven. Glenn promised changes after that loss to Truman, which was the first time the Mustangs had won at Kennedy perhaps ever. The 13th-year coach wasn’t joking – he called up freshman Moet Jenkins from the JV and credited the gritty guard for giving the team a spark in the second half against Lewis (4-5, 4-3.

“She plays like a big girl,” Glenn said of the 5-foot-6 Jenkins. “She’s a tough kid.”

The win was a positive sign for Kennedy heading into Christmas. Next week, the Knights will be upstate at the Amsterdam holiday event, which they compete in every year. They’ll try to get revenge Tuesday against Shaker (N.Y.), the team that routed them up there last year. Glenn also expects to get back Robin Daley (broken wrist) back after the holidays.

“We’re gonna be alright,” the coach said.
