Ski resorts offering military discounts

Skiing for the holiday season will be a little thin because Mother Nature has not been very cooperative, but most resorts will offer some goodies for Christmas week.

With the last of U.S. troops departing Iraq this month, three New England resorts have teamed up to offer military personnel — active and reserve — special discounts to welcome them home.

Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Mass.; Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, N.H.; and Bromley Mountain in Peru, Vt. will offer savings on everything from lodging to lift tickets to rentals and lesson programs.

All U.S. Armed Forces personnel on active duty or active reserve status and their families, as well as military on inactive duty for military qualify for the program.

* The Red Barn Bar located in the Lower Discovery Lodge at Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills will be holding its grand opening on Saturday.

The Red Barn bar was created and built by Belleayre Mountain employees as a representation of the Catskill Mountains.

The main inspiration behind the bar was farming, specifically dairy farming. All of the horse tackles and farm implements used to decorate the Red Barn were donated by local community farmers.

* American skiers Hannah Kearney and Ashley Caldwell will try to defend their World Cup crowns when the FIS Freestyle World Cup returns to Lake Placid, N.Y. and Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, N.Y., Jan. 19-21. Lake Placid is one of just five U.S. sites selected to play host to a World Cup event this season.
