Figoski fund for slain NYPD hero’s girls passes $1M

Thank you, New York! Contributions to the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund for the slain NYPD cop’s four daughters soared past the $1 million mark yesterday.

The fund — launched just a week ago by the New York Post and the $1,109,776 and growing as celebrities, politicians and regular folks opened their wallets to help the cause.

OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT: New Yorkers have stepped up to assist the grieving daughters of Officer Peter Figoski. (James Messerschmidt)

Figoski, 47, was murdered by a cowardly thug on Dec. 12 as the 22-year NYPD veteran responded to a Brooklyn robbery.

He left behind four daughters: Christine, 19, a SUNY Oneonta undergrad; Caitlyn, 18, a SUNY Plattsburgh undergrad; Caroline, 16, and Corrine, 14, both high-school students in their hometown of West Babylon, LI.

“The Post is honored to have joined with the Police Foundation in establishing the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund,” said Post Editor in Chief Col Allan.

“We believe the men and women who keep us safe are special, and so are their families. As always, New Yorkers stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in times of despair and need.

“We salute all those who have given so generously,” Allan said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “New Yorkers instinctively understand that an attack on a police officer is an attack on the city at large.

“Their stunning generosity toward Officer Figoski’s four daughters demonstrated as much, and more. The outpouring of support that The Post accommodated and gave voice to is appreciated at all levels of the department.

“We are all grateful, and hope that it gives some measure of peace to the Figoski family,” Kelly said.

The $1 million benchmark — which included donations by such celebrities as Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, Don Imus and Bill O’Reilly — was reached two days after about 20,000 cops, friends and others turned out to mourn Figoski at Monday’s funeral.

Donations to the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible and can be made by mailing checks to the charity’s addresses.

Credit- and debit-card donations can be made at www.nycpolicefoundation.org

Both mail and online donations should be clearly marked for the Peter Figoski Scholarship Fund.

Meanwhile, The Post has learned that Figoski’s partner, Officer Glenn Estrada, who chased down and nabbed the accused shooter in the killing, will be promoted to detective tomorrow.

Sources said the unusual elevation in rank — skipping over several traditional steps — is in recognition of Estrada’s heroism.

Figoski was posthumously promoted to detective first-grade, retroactively one year.
