PSAL boys basketball rankings

How wild is the PSAL boys basketball season? Even the week of Christmas, a traditionally dead few days, we have changes.

Red-hot Transit Tech moves into the top 10, replacing Eagle Academy off its blowout loss to Wings Academy. Streaking Wadleigh moves up to No. 8 and Campus Magnet drops to 10th after it was routed by Holy Cross. For that and much, much more, read below:

1. Lincoln (7-0) (Last week: 1)

We’ve been lobbying for Lincoln to get nationally ranked. They have the star (Isaiah Whitehead), impact forwards (Tafari Whittingham and Travis Charles) and guard play (Ethan Telfair, Da’Shawn Suber, Shaquille Davis and Ian Vasquez) to play with anyone in the country. The Railsplitters get to prove it – and make us look smart in the process – this week in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

Next: Bishop Manogue (Nev.), MaxPreps Holiday Classic (Dec. 27, 530 p.m.)

2. Boys & Girls (6-1) (2)

The Kangaroos have been off since Dec. 15, when they fell to South Shore, 61-58. That’s plenty of practice time for Boys High, which will be chomping at the bit by the time New Year’s Day comes around and it takes on Philadelphia power Robert Vaux in the fifth annual Villa Holiday Classic.

Next: Robert Vaux (Pa.), Villa Holiday Classic (Jan. 1, 3:45 p.m.)

3. Thomas Jefferson (9-4) (3)

After a 2-2 performance in the Kreul Classic Sweet Sixteen Championship, Jefferson came home and smoked George Westinghouse, 78-56, behind 23 points from Jaquan Lynch and 14 from Jermoine Faison. The Orange Wave may not be quite championship caliber – so much of their team is young and still developing – but they will be next year as coach Lawrence (Bud) Pollard’s club loses just Thaddeus Hall, who is temporarily on the shelf with a bad back.

Next: @ No. 2 Boys & Girls (Jan. 3, 5 p.m.)

4. South Shore (8-4) (4)

Wayne Martin has been the Vikings’ biggest constant through their up-and-down season. He rebounds, he finishes inside, he blocks shots and alters them as well. The 6-foot-7 senior forward is clearly one of the PSAL’s top big men and will help whatever low-to-mid-major Division I program lands him.

Next: Transit Tech (Jan. 5, 5 p.m.)

5. Curtis (9-0) (5)

Thursday’s matchup with Bronx power Eagle Academy just got tougher for Curtis as dynamic junior forward Hassan Martin will be out a few weeks with a broken finger. Fortunately for the Warriors, they have seniors like Dontay Jackson, Kevin McIntosh and DaShawn Richmond to pick up the slack.

Next: Eagle Academy, Aviator Shootout (Dec. 29, 8 p.m.)

6. Wings Academy (9-0) (6)

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Justin Jenkins is a mid-major Division I guard. MAAC and NEC programs need to be all over the talented floor general with the smooth jumper who dropped 36 points in a dominant 98-66 rout of Eagle Academy last Tuesday. Wings is undefeated and sitting comfortably atop Bronx AA in large part due to the quiet and humble Jenkins.

Next: Dixie Heights (Ky.), STOP-DWI Holiday Classic (Dec. 28, 1 p.m.)

7. Cardozo (6-1) (7)

That loss to Campus Magnet, which snapped the Judges’ 28-game win streak against Queens PSAL competition, seems to have woken up Cardozo. It has followed with impressive wins over Forest Hills, Bayside and Martin Van Buren. We’ll get a good feel on Ron Naclerio’s club Sunday when it takes on Constitution and former Villanova commit Savon Goodman in the fifth annual Villa Holiday Classic in Philadelphia.

Next: Constitution (Pa.), Villa Holiday Classic (Jan. 1, 12 p.m.)

8. Wadleigh (9-3) (10)

Of the many gifts we received over the holidays, the best present remains a Mike Crump postgame talk. The Wadleigh coach is always entertaining, honest – win or lose – and has a team capable of making March noise, which only adds to his off-the-wall character. This season is no different. Led by Division I-caliber wing Louis Costen and underrated point guard Basil Harley, the Tigers are again cruising through Manhattan AA undefeated.

Next: Xaverian, New Heights Holiday Hoop Festival (Jan. 2, 3 p.m.)

9. Transit Tech (5-6 (NR)

Like seemingly all of Mike Perazzo’s teams, Transit Tech is getting better as the new year approaches. After a hard-luck loss to Wadleigh last weekend, it took apart George Westinghouse and Grady for consecutive league victories and should continue its recent winning ways this week against New Utrecht and Tilden in the Aviator Shootout. Senior wing Richard Williams is playing like a mid-major Division I prospect.

Next: New Utrecht, Aviator Shootout (Dec. 27, 8 p.m.)

10. Campus Magnet (10-3) (9)

The Bulldogs were never themselves in a 58-38 loss at Holy Cross on Thursday. They showed up late and didn’t find a flow until late in the third quarter, after the final result had been established. We’re willing to consider the loss an aberration – Sam Durodola and Tarik Raynor are still exceptional talents – and think Campus Magnet can learn from the thorough beating.

Next: Beach Channel (Jan. 5, 5 p.m.)

New: Transit Tech (5-6)

Dropped out: Eagle Academy (10-1)

On the bubble: Eagle Academy (10-1), John F. Kennedy (6-2), CSI/McCown (7-2), Bayside (7-4), Robeson (6-7), Gompers and Brooklyn Collegiate (11-0)
