Former ‘SNL’ and ‘Wayne’s World’ writer dead in apparent suicide

LOS ANGELES — A former writer for “Saturday Night Live” was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room after apparently committing suicide, TMZ reported Tuesday.

Joe Bodolai, a staff writer for the 1981-82 season of “SNL” and co-writer of the first draft of the “Wayne’s World” movie, was found Monday by hotel cleaning staff. He was 63.

Police believe he killed himself by ingesting antifreeze. A bottle of antifreeze and Gatorade was recovered from his room, where he had been staying for more than a week.

On Dec. 23, he posted an apparent suicide note titled “If This Was Your Last Day Alive What Would You Do?” to his blog.

He listed his work on “SNL” and the “Wayne’s World” screenplay under the heading “Things I Am Proud Of,” while his “Things I Regret” list included “my inability to conquer my alcoholism” and “the things I did because of it.”

The note concluded with, “May you all have the happy lives you deserve. Thank you all for being in my life.”
