City corrections bus overturns on Thruway, inmates injured

A bus carrying 16 prisoners to an upstate facility overturned this morning on the New York State Thruway, authorities said.

The jailbirds, who were returning to prison after making court appearances in the city, were all accounted for, authorities said. A few were being treated to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, but officials said there were no serious injuries.

“It appears the bus was cut off by an unknown vehicle which caused the crash,” State police Capt. Evelyn Mallard told the Journal News of Westchester County.

The bus was returning the prisoners to a medium-security prison in Ulster County.

“Three DOC staff were on board,” the Department of Correction said in a statement. “All inmates and staff were escorted off the bus.”

The bus flipped onto the driver’s side side on Interstate 87, between exits 14A and 14B near Ramapo, in Rockland County. The 10:40 a.m. accident snarled traffic on the northbound Thruway while police worked to clear the scene.

Footage of the wreck shot from a television news helicopter showed uninjured prisoners handcuffed to each other near the bus, while others were placed in ambulances.
