JFK, La Guardia and Newark terminals among worst in world

Fliers are getting a horrible first and last impression of New York.

Three area airport terminals were cited as among the worst in the world yesterday — with Kennedy’s Terminal 3 earning the dubious distinction as the most miserable layover location on the planet.

The former Pan Am terminal — which now houses Delta Air Lines — took home the dubious dishonor for its “endless immigration lines,” crummy food and shopping options, and dank environment, according to the travel Web site Frommer’s.

“JFK’s terminals range from the awful to the mediocre, but Delta’s hubs take the rotten, worm-infested cake,” according to Frommer’s.

The terminal was in such shoddy shape that it was ranked three spots below Nairobi’s International Airport — described by the site as a “Third World construction site” that travelers should avoid.

Fortunately for area fliers, Port Authority and Delta Air Lines are in the midst of a $1.2 billion renovation of Terminal 3, which is expected to be complete in 2013.

The bottom-10 list of the worst terminals includes two others in the New York area — La Guardia’s US Airways Terminal and Newark’s Terminal B, ranked at seventh and eighth, respectively.

The rundown La Guardia terminal earned low marks for being “dull” and “sad.”

“At least the central terminal [at La Guardia] has an atrium and the Delta terminal just got some new food options,” according to Frommer’s.

Meanwhile, Newark Liberty Airport’s Terminal B — home to international airlines like British Airways and Air France — was knocked for its poor layout and lack of food and shopping choices.

The rankings were no surprise to New Yorkers who travel frequently.

“There is nothing to do in here,” said Renaee Shuman, 38, a marketing consultant at JFK’s Terminal 3 yesterday.

Frommer’s did have one bit of good news for flying the friendly skies out of New York City.

JFK’s Terminal 5 — which Jet Blue flies into and out of — ranked fifth on the list of the 10 best terminals. The Hajj terminal at Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah airport topped that list.
