Cardozo girls volleyball takes City Hall

The Cardozo girls volleyball players were excited Wednesday when they got a chance to see City Hall in Manhattan. There were some long faces, though, when they realized Mike Bloomberg wasn’t there.

“They were disappointed they weren’t gonna meet him,” Judges coach Danny Scarola said. “But I told them, ‘They invited you down here. Do you see any teams here with you? This is a nice honor.’”

The spirit of the players, who led Cardozo to a second straight PSAL Class A city title in November, brightened when every one of their names were announced during a meeting. They were given a proclamation of congratulations calling Cardozo one of the city’s great schools and listing everyone and Scarola.

“It was a pretty nice little thing,” Scarola said. “They also honored 10 firefighters who saved people from a burning building in Brooklyn. To be there with them, that must mean something pretty special.”

The team was invited to the ceremony by Mark Weprin, the city councilman who represents the Oakland Gardens and Bayside area. He called Cardozo principal Gerald Martori and set it up. The players all got to meet him and receive his congratulations.

In December, Cardozo girls volleyball was invited to Yankee Stadium with other PSAL city title winners to be honored on the field during halftime of the PSAL football city championship game. Scarola said it feel like the season keeps on going – in a good way. Star outside hitter Ashley Grubler was also recently announced as the winner of the PSAL’s Wingate award, given annually to the top senior in every sport.

“It was wonderful for our team to be honored for our accomplishments,” Grubler said of the city hall visit. “It was definitely like the icing on the cake for our amazing season.”

With or without meeting Bloomberg.
