Girls basketball roundup: McDonough hurt in Goldstein’s showcase win over Baruch

Goldstein was absolutely cruising with a little over a minute left in the third quarter. The Dolphins led Baruch College Campus by 15 points and about to coast to an easy victory.

Then Chestnut Hill-bound point guard Brittany McDonough fell in a heap and left the game with a painful ankle injury. Everything changed from there.

“She’s our point guard,” Goldstein senior Nora Elbassiony said. “She runs the game. We all depend on her to pass the ball. When she came out, everyone was just upset and we couldn’t get it together after that.”

Baruch would cut the lead to one possession late, but Goldstein held on for a 41-31 win Saturday at the PSAL ‘A’ Girls Basketball Showcase at HS for Construction in Queens.

Terri Chu’s layup got Baruch (10-5) within 34-31 with 2:16 left, but Dunia Elbassiony had a putback and Danielle Bonsignore came up with a massive steal, drive and three-point play to give Goldstein (15-2) a 39-31 advantage with just 53 seconds remaining.

“That was a really big play,” Nora Elbassiony said.

With McDonough out and guard Danielle Natoli on the bench with four fouls, it was Nora Elbassiony who had to take over point-guard duties. She’s capable, but Goldstein isn’t nearly as effective with her bringing up the ball.

“She’s my shooter,” Dolphins coach Adrian Buchhalter said of Nora Elbassiony. “Natoli can handle the ball, but she had four fouls. … [Nora] likes to shoot and score. And she drives.”

Nora Elbassiony had 12 points and Dunia Elbassiony and Natoli added eight points apiece. Chu had 10 points and Kayla Chan and Miyna Chen Powell added nine for Baruch, which was without starting point guard Patti Curran. She fell on her head Monday in a game against St. Mary’s (L.I.) in the Rose Classic Super Jam at Bishop Ford and has a concussion.

As for McDonough, Buchhalter said it looks like just a mild sprain and she could be back after this coming week, which PSAL teams have off anyway due to Regents. McDonough has had trouble with that ankle and just finished physical therapy on it after an injury in the summer. Goldstein can’t lose her for a long stretch if it hopes to be an ‘A’ title contender.

“She’s walking,” Buchhalter said. “We’ve got Regents week. After that is [division rival] Madison. Hopefully she’ll be back soon.”

Brookyn Tech 41, Flushing 23: Deena Muzafar had 15 points and Crystal Barnes had 13 points to lead Brooklyn Tech (14-1) in the PSAL ‘A’ Girls Basketball Showcase. Erica Redwood and Melissa Lijo each had eight points for Flushing (9-3).

DeWitt Clinton 42, Hillcrest 19: Maguette Fofana had 17 points and Destini Green and Alondra Soroa each had seven points for Clinton (10-5) in the PSAL ‘A’ Girls Basketball Showcase. Diamond Edwards had seven points for Hillcrest (11-3), which was playing without star Danielle Pearce (knee).

CHSAA BROOKLYN/QUEENS DIVISION I

Archbishop Molloy 55, St. Francis Prep 31: Utshana Durham scored 11 points and Carolyn Gallagher had 10 for Archbishop Molloy (11-3, 4-23) in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I. Alexa (Weasel) Dietrich added nine points. Melissa Pearson paced St. Francis Prep (0-14, 0-5) with nine points. The Stanners played without point guard Amani Tatum, who suffered a concussion in a win over Christ the King on Wednesday.

NON-LEAGUE

Riverdale-Baptist (Md.) 83, Nazareth 47: Jonquel Jones, who is headed to Clemson, scored 22 points and Towson signee Dominique Johnson had 17 points for Riverdale-Baptist (17-1), ranked No. 3 in the country by HoopGurlz, in non-league. Keilla Atkinsom added 13 points. Bianca Cuevas tallied 16 points to lead No. 2 Nazareth (4-1). Brianna Butler had nine points and Darius Faulk added eight.

Staten Island Academy 60, Marymount 30: Bethany Claps poured in 23 points for Staten Island Academy (12-2) in non-league. Sam Avis and Sade Dinkins each added eight points and Erin Gibbons chipped in seven.
