Giants’ Baas fires back at Patriots’ Wilfork

INDIANAPOLIS — Giants center David Baas has heard quite enough about Vince Wilfork and the Patriots defensive line, thank you very much.

The normally mild-mannered Baas let loose after getting one too many questions about Wilfork and his teammates during Media Day at Super Bowl XLVI here yesterday, insisting he and his Giants line mates deserve as much respect as New England’s Pro Bowl nose tackle.

“We deserve to be here, too,” said Baas, a free-agent signing from the 49ers in the offseason who is making his first career Super Bowl appearance. “We busted our butts to be here, just like they did.”

Raising his voice suddenly, Baas added, “We’re no slouches!”

A Baas-Wilfork matchup could be one of the keys of Sunday’s game at Lucas Oil Stadium, although Wilfork could end up being the assignment of several different Giants linemen because Bill Belichick likes to alternate his defensive fronts from a 4-3 to a 3-4 during games.

Baas missed the first game between the two teams in November due to injury, a fact he appeared to regret when asked about it yesterday as he all but demanded to take on Wilfork by himself this weekend.

“I’m ready for anything,” Baas said. “It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but we’re up for it, we’re here at the Super Bowl, we’re confident and we came to win.”

Baas’ face got flush as his voice rose again.

“We’re not just going to step aside,” he barked. “We’re here for a reason!”
