Queens grandmother killed in late-night fire

A fast-moving fire killed a Queens grandmother today as the rest of her family managed to escape from the South Jamaica blaze.

“The family was screaming for their grandmother,” said neighbor Lola Reid.

“She never came out of the house.”

Elaine Spencer, 69, died at the scene, officials said.

“She was a sweet woman. Everyone on this block loved her,” said Jessica Banks, 25, a relative of the victim.

Rickey Anderson was walking home on 120th Avenue near Sutphin Boulevard around midnight when he saw the flames shooting out of the two-family home.

“Me and and another guy ran to the top of the stairs and opened the door,” he said.

“There was a lot of smoke and flames.”

Anderson, 55, said he heard Spencer’s relatives screaming for someone to rescue her, but he couldn’t overcome the intense heat and smoke.

“I heard them yelling that their mother was in the house.

“I tried to get in there. I wished I could have gone in there, I’m not Superman but I wish I could have gone in there.”

None of the other family members were hurt.
