Giants’ Canty making parade plans

INDIANAPOLIS — Unlike Giants teammate Antrel Rolle, Chris Canty isn’t backtracking in the guarantee department.

Canty is so sure the Giants will beat the Patriots here Sunday in Super Bowl XLVI that the veteran defensive tackle repeatedly predicted a victory celebration during yesterday’s media session at the team hotel.

One day after Rolle caused a stir by guaranteeing victory then backing off moments later, Canty went “all in” starting with his on-camera response to a New York TV reporter who asked what message he wanted to send to Giants fans back home.

“Get ready for a great day on Super Bowl Sunday … and get ready for a parade on Tuesday,” Canty said.

Canty then shrugged at the notion that his words would fire up the Patriots on Sunday night at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“I don’t care,” Canty said. “Doesn’t matter. Obviously, Tom Brady made a statement at their pep rally [predicting a similar post-Super Bowl party]. I’m not trying to inflame anybody or anything like that. I want our fans to be excited about the game that’s coming up on Sunday.”

Canty said he needed only to look at the Giants’ current five-game win streak to justify his expectation that Big Blue will be toasted on its way through the Canyon of Heroes come Tuesday.

“This team is very confident, with good reason,” Canty said. “Because of the road that we’ve gone down, the road we’ve traveled.”

Canty’s crystal-ball act was something of a surprise, considering he is among the least-heralded members of a Giants defensive line, considered by most observers to be the best in football.

A run-stuffer who began his career with the Cowboys before signing with their NFC East rival in 2009, Canty finds it difficult to shine sometimes while Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora grab headlines by terrorizing quarterbacks.

All of that attention devoted to his linemates might have helped Canty on the field, however. With opponents constantly doubling Pierre-Paul, Canty notched a career-high four sacks this season despite playing a position not known for producing them.

Canty said he remains a bit surprised and puzzled even to be in a Giants uniform, considering the franchise’s astounding success rate in drafting quality defensive linemen.

“They’re known for drafting pass rushers, and then they go and sign a run-stopper like me,” Canty said. “It’s like, ‘What am I doing here?’ But the chance to join a great organization like this was too good to pass up. I had to jump at the opportunity.”
