CHSAA/Private girls basketball roundup: Tatum, Gallagher return as Molloy tops SFP

Scott Lagas didn’t expect to play Carolyn Gallagher against St. Francis Prep. The junior forward suffered a broken nose in a loss to Moore Catholic over the weekend at the Kennedy Challenge. The Terriers got out quick and Gallagher, who chose not to wear a mask, was eventually inserted in the game.

“She’s just toughing it out,” Lagas said.

She scored 20 points to help lead Molloy to a 63-51 win over host St. Francis Prep in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II girls basketball Wednesday night. Star guard Amani Tatum also made her return after missing three games with a concussion and tallied 16 points.

“It was nice to get them back on the floor,” Lagas said. “Amani still wasn’t anywhere near herself, but it was a good game to get her feet wet and work through the rust.”

Lagas credited the energy of junior forward Patti Dorgler, who had 10 points and 10 boards, in assisting in sparking the comeback. Molloy (12-6, 5-3) trailed 17-7 after the first quarter and 29-23 at the half. Veronica Ganzi poured in 25 points and collected four steals and Caitlin O’Doherty had seven points and 14 boards for St. Francis Prep (0-16, 0-6). Melissa Pearson added nine points and nine points.

“Patti Dorgler played with unbelievable energy,” Lagas said. … “She did lead us back.”
