Forget the line – Drones use GPS to deliver beer to music festival revellers in the crowd

Revellers at a South African music festival are being treated to air-delivered beer, via drone.

The outdoor Oppikoppi rock festival has kicked off in the country’s northern Limpop province and the festival’s director says music fans need not miss their favorite band to line up for drinks.

Revellers can order the beer on their smartphone and a drone will find them in the crowd, using the phone’s GPS, and delivery the beer with a parachute.

“The delivery guys have a calibrated delivery drone. They send it to the GPS position and drop it with a parachute,” festival director Carel Hoffmann told AFP.

“It’s an almost Biblical thing that beer is dropping from the sky,”

“Every time it drops a parachute a crowd of 5000 cheers,”

The drone is nicknamed “Manna” after the food god dropped from the sky to feed the Israelites in an Old Testament story.
