‘Cop shooter’ charged in vicious Bronx assault of off-duty officer

A thug who shot a hero cop twice in the Bronx Sunday was charged in the vicious assault, police said.

Joseph Baez, 21, allegedly shot Officer Nelson Vergara in the left shoulder and right shin after a gang of hooligans began taunting him and attacked the off-duty cop with a bottle early that morning, cops said.

Vergara, who served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine, was able to bravely fire back at Baez and cuff the bottle thrower, authorities said.

Baez was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, as well as reckless endangerment, cops said.

Vergara, who is assigned to the 33rd Precinct in Washington Heights, left St. Barnabas Hospital just 30 hours after the attack, and is recovering at home with his family.
