Another bad Obama DREAM

The Issue: Whether President Obama’s move to implement the DREAM Act is unconstitutional.

Evidently, our president believes that there is only one branch of government, namely the Executive, and he can make all decisions unilaterally without regard to either Congress or the Supreme Court (“The ‘DREAM’ Order Isn’t Legal,” Kris W. Kobach, PostOpinion, June 22).

Being a lawyer, he should have read the Constitution and know that the separation of powers gives the other two branches a say in the decision he has just made about not deporting illegal immigrants.

I would hope in the future that he would consult legal authorities before issuing illegal orders.

The authority given to the president is to execute the laws enacted by Congress. The president cannot make laws, and he cannot determine which laws to enforce and which laws he deems unconstitutional. Only the Supreme Court can rule a law unconstitutional.

A president takes an oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution. But President Obama has completely ignored the Constitution by telling the Justice Department not to enforce DOMA, trying to force religious institutions to provide insurance that covers contraception when it is against religious beliefs and telling Homeland Security not to enforce our immigration laws.
