WWE’s Lawler responsive, taken off ventilation after heart attack

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler was taken off of ventilation and is responsive following his heart attack on Monday night.

The 62-year-old ringside announcer underwent a series of tests and surgery on Tuesday, just hours after suffering a heart attack on WWE’s Monday Night Raw following a match.

“The docs are removing his ventilation & taking him out of sedation,” Lawler’s ex-wife and former WWE Diva Stacy Carter wrote on her Facebook page. “He is responsive, which is great!!! It took a while to revive him last night so there’s the concern of brain damage. He had some tests done which will show how much if any damage there is due to the lack of oxygen to his brain.”

Lawler was clinically dead for 15 minutes and was revived after being shocked seven times and having CPR administered.

According to a report from WMCTV.com, a Memphis-area news outlet, Lawler’s tests showed that he did not suffer brain damage.

Lawler, who had just participated in a tag-team match alongside Randy Orton, reportedly collapsed at the announcer’s table and was taken away on a stretcher with his shirt ripped open. Lawler was backstage at the Centre Bell in Montreal receiving CPR.

“This is not part of the show,” a somber Michael Cole, Lawler’s commentator announced shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday during the show’s telecast.

News of Lawler’s heart attack rocked the wrestling world. The Memphis native has been in wrestling for over 40 years and has won 168 championships in his storied career.
