Elderly woman dies in Brooklyn fire

An elderly woman was found dead after a fire raged through the bedroom of her Brooklyn apartment last night.

Firefighters responded at 11:09 p.m. to the blaze on the 12th floor at Taylor-Wythe Houses on Ross Street in Williamsburg.

The 78-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was chaotic. It just took seconds,” said Yvonne Diaz, 52, who lives on the 3rd floor.

Diaz said the victim was a retired employee of Eastern District High School in Williamsburg. “She’s a very nice lady,” Diaz said. “She doesn’t come out of the apartment much.”

More than 70 firefighters responded to the blazewhich ignited the woman’s mattress.

“There was a lot of panic … I was a little scared,” said Zoraida Perez, 72, who lives on the 13th floor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
