Jones spurs Iona to 300th MAAC win

Lamont “Momo” Jones led the way with 23 points and David Laury pitched in his fifth double-double of the season as Iona topped Loyola (Md.) 79-71 yesterday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action in Baltimore.

Jones entered fourth in the NCAA averaging 22.3 points per game and hit 11 of 12 free throws while upping his average.

The Gaels (14-7, 8-2) have won eight of their past nine games. The win was Iona’s 300th in MAAC play, the most of any current conference member.

Manhattan 62, Rider 51

In Lawrenceville, N.J., freshman Shane Richards missed just one shot en route to 19 points and Rhamel Brown posted a double-double as Manhattan (6-14, 4-6 MAAC) snapped a three-game skid. Jonathon Thompson scored 18 points on 7 of 9 shooting for Rider (11-11, 6-4).

Niagara 66, Canisius 55

In Buffalo, Marvin Jordan came off the bench to score 23 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer for Niagara (13-8, 9-1 MAAC).

Siena 79, Marist 75

In Poughkeepsie, O.D. Anosike scored 20 points and fell one rebound short of a career-high with 21 as Siena (5-16, 3-7 MAAC) held off Marist (5-16, 2-8).

Fairfield 61, Saint Peter’s 54

In Jersey City, Derek Needham scored 19 points and Desmond Wade posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards as Fairfield (12-10, 4-6 MAAC) defeated Saint Peter’s (6-14, 1-9).

Indiana 75, Michigan State 70

In Bloomington, Ind., Victor Oladipo scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and finished with six steals, leading No. 7 Indiana (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten) past No. 13 Michigan State (17-4, 6-2).

Michigan 74, Illinois 60

In Champaign, Ill., Trey Burke scored 19 points and No. 2 Michigan recorded a win over Illinois that could push the Wolverines (19-1, 6-1 Big Ten) to No. 1 in the nation for the first time since 1992-93.

Creighton 81, Southern Illinois 51

In Carbondale, Ill., Doug McDermott had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 17 Creighton (18-3, 7-2 MVC).

Miami 71, Florida State 47

In Coral Gables, Fla., Miami won its seventh straight by defeating No. 25 Florida State.
