Giants report card

OFFENSE

All things considered, patchwork line wasn’t a disaster although two sacks, one safety allowed and nothing doing (41 yards) on the ground. Eli Manning (23-of-42, 256 yards) nearly made it without an INT and continues to miss some throws he should make. This is what the Giants hoped Jerrel Jernigan (6 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD) would be.

C

DEFENSE

Points were needed and Will Hill got ’em with interception of side-arming Matt Stafford for 38-yard TD return late in fourth quarter. Big game for Mathias Kiwanuka (two sacks, one forced fumble). Too many leaks against Joique Bell (20-91) in run game. Calvin Johnson (3-43) wasn’t 100 percent, but Prince Amukamara held Megatron without a catch after halftime.

B

SPECIAL TEAMS

One of those “No, no … yes’’ moments when Michael Cox takes kickoff in OT out of end zone from 7 yards deep and busts 56-yard return. Giants had the momentum until allowing a 50-yard punt return to Jeremy Ross, with Spencer Paysinger flying in and missing tackle. The next time, Steve Weatherford smartly drilled one 49 yards out of bounds. Rookie Damontre Moore with a terrible offside penalty on punt. Josh Brown nails 45-yard game-winning FG, also hits from 41 and 52 yards inside the dome.

B

COACHING

Cheers for Tom Coughlin for not playing it safe, eschewing punting the ball away on fourth-and-7 in OT. Had to like the way Kevin Gilbride put in more rollout passes this week to help injury-riddled offensive line. Kudos to Perry Fewell for not sticking to the norm and for sticking his best cornerback on Lions top receiver.
