‘Groper’s pit-iful escape

A man who was accused of groping a woman in Greenwich Village got some instant payback last night — when he fell down a hole moments after the alleged attack, witnesses said.

The man tumbled some 15 feet into the ConEd construction pit on West Third Street near Mercer Street at about 8 p.m.

While the man was lying stunned at the bottom of the hole, a woman came up and accused him of groping her moments earlier, according to workers at the site.

“A woman came up to us very distraught,’’ said a Con Ed worker who was among a crew of four men who had barricaded the open section of sidewalk and were working in it at various times to fix an underground transformer.

“She was, like, a man came up to her. She said he groped her. So we said, ‘Where is he at?’ And he’s right here,’’ said the flabbergasted worker, pointing to the hole.

“The hole was open. It was barricaded,’’ the worker said. “The guy was under the influence of I don’t know what.’’

The FDNY responded to the scene and hauled out the man — who had been trapped for about 15 minutes — before taking him to Bellevue Hospital.

“As far as I could see, he was OK,’’ another worker said. “He was moving.’’

The incident occurred in front of 2 Mercer, a large apartment building.

The man’s condition was not known, and police could not say if the woman had formally made a sexual-assault complaint against him.
