Finding a proper pathway

The Issue: Various proposals to deal with America’s illegal immigrants and those who seek to come here.

You don’t close the drain plug to fix a leaking faucet (“Conservatives and Citizenship,” Linda Chavez, PostOpinion, March 9).

The border must be fixed before any comprehensive immigration program is put in place.

The majority of these illegals are decent folks. Give them an opportunity to become taxpaying guest workers with a three-year renewal period or deportation, and no Social Security. Any felony would result in automatic deportation.

The only way to gain the full benefits of a US citizen is to become one.

That means go back and apply for legal entry.

Millions of illegal immigrants in America are opportunists who want money to send home, where their loyalty lies.

Some of them may have some feelings for the United States, but they do not demonstrate it. They don’t stand up or remove hats when the American flag passes by them in a parade.

Most do not want to serve the US as soldiers.

Most do not try or want to learn English, and retain their original culture and language. They do not assimilate or become part of our society.

Yet there are those who would grant them immediate citizenship. Why?
