Kolb could be next in Jets pile of quarterback leftovers

The Jets may need to expand the quarterbacks meeting room, as they could add another player to their quarterback competition in the coming days.

The team has had internal discussions about adding Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb, according to a source, once he is released by Arizona. The NFL Network reported yesterday the Cardinals would release Kolb before having to pay him a $2 million roster bonus Saturday. Kolb is also due a $9 million base salary.

This will be a “kicking the tires” situation for the Jets to see if Kolb is affordable. If his asking price is reasonable, then it could happen. The Jets have about $15 million in salary cap space, but they already have about a $17 million cap figure at the position. They signed David Garrard this week to a one-year, $1.1 million contract. Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms also are under contract, though Tebow is expected to be released.

The Jets are expected to add one more quarterback through free agency or the draft, and Kolb could be the one. Adding Kolb would create an interesting four-way competition with Sanchez, Kolb, Garrard and McElroy through the spring and summer.

Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg knows Kolb from their time with the Eagles. Kolb, 28, spent his first four seasons with the Eagles before being traded to the Cardinals, where he spent the last two years. Kolb split time with John Skelton and Ryan Lindley as the team’s starter last year, battling a ribs injury that cost him the final 2 1/2 months of the season.

Kolb threw for eight touchdowns and had three interceptions with 1,169 yards passing in six games.

Senior personnel executive Terry Bradway was at West Virginia’s Pro Day yesterday evaluating quarterback Geno Smith, but it seems unlikely the Jets would use the No. 9 overall pick on a quarterback.

Tebow’s remaining presence on the Jets’ roster is tough to explain. A source said the Jets still are trying to trade him, but it seems clear they won’t find a trading partner. The Jets are expected to release him, but the question is when.

The Jets already have lost defensive end Mike DeVito, running back Shonn Greene and safeties LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell as free agents. Tight end Dustin Keller had a two-day meeting with the Dolphins, but left yesterday without a contract. A source said the two sides will continue to talk and a deal still sounds possible.

Free agent wide receiver Brandon Gibson finished his two-day visit with the Jets yesterday without a deal. He also has visits with the Dolphins and Titans planned, according to a source.

The Jets also had free agent visits from running back Mike Goodson and linebacker Antwan Barnes yesterday.
