The noise around Darrelle Revis being traded quieted down a bit yesterday as many of the free agent cornerbacks came off the market.
As The Post reported yesterday, the Jets are fielding offers for Revis but are being patient and deliberate to get exactly what they are looking for in a trade proposal.
The Buccaneers are considered the favorites to land Revis, but Yahoo! Sports reported Tampa Bay is unwilling to part with its first-round pick this year, and that is holding up any trade.
Jets general manger John Idzik’s patient approach might pay off if Revis’ asking price comes down and more teams feel they can work out a long-term deal.
The salary numbers the top corners have gotten could give Revis’ agents pause. Sean Smith, considered one of the top two cornerbacks on the market, got a three-year, $18 million deal from the Chiefs. That means if Revis is seeking $15 million-$16 million a year in his next deal with the Jets or a team he is traded to, his agents would have to argue Revis is 2 1/2 times the player Smith is.
Three other free agent cornerbacks received between $5 million-$6 million a year — Chris Houston with the Lions, Keenan Lewis with the Saints and Cary Williams with the Eagles.
Some people around the league feel Revis is so much better than what is available on the open market that he will get his money.
“He’s by far the best available option,” a league source said.
Aqib Talib and Brent Grimes remain available as the top cornerback choices.
