McDonald’s has steak in its future

As the fast-food wars escalate, McDonald’s is trying an upscale approach to breakfast.

The world’s biggest burger chain says its 9,600 US restaurants are adding steak for an added charge to any of its breakfast sandwiches, including the Egg McMuffin, the McGriddles Sandwich and the Egg & Cheese Biscuit.

There’s no sign of eggs benedict or fresh-fruit crepes coming to the menu, but steak can be substituted for sausage on any platter, such as the hotcakes and sausage combo.

The move is part of a strategy to prop up sagging US sales by enlarging the average check. While McDonald’s comparable sales rose 1.9 percent worldwide last month, the domestic increase was just 0.2 percent.

In New York, the premium upgrade to a Steak McMuffin will run you $1 extra, bringing the tab to $3.49 from $2.49 for a regular Egg McMuffin.

Price won’t be the only thing going up: the Steak McMuffin will carry 41 percent of the daily recommended dose of sodium, versus 33 percent in the original.

The slabs of beef, which come in processed patty form, are topped with caramelized onions and seasoned with salt and garlic.

McDonald’s is making the change as rivals lately have scored hits with new creations, including Wendy’s Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger and the Burger King French Fry Burger.

Recently, McDonald’s has tried to add healthier options to its menu such as chicken wraps and egg-white sandwiches.

Last week, the chain said it is exploring a revamped dollar menu with items priced as high as $5.
