More than 1,400 employees could face layoffs at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Notice has gone out that more than 1,400 employees could face layoffs at Atlantic City’s Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.

Officials say the notice is a formality in advance of the sale of Trump Plaza to the Meruelo Group for $20 million. State law requires 60 days’ notice of closings and layoffs.

Meruelo Group president Xavier Gutierrez tells The Press of Atlantic City the company intends to keep most Trump Plaza employees. He declined to go into detail.

The sale is expected to close in May.

Atlantic Club Casino Hotel in Atlantic City filed similar notice in January that 1,729 employees may lose their jobs as part of a pending sale to the world’s largest online poker website. The company said no job cuts are planned.
