Former Jets DE DeVito lands with Chiefs: source

The Jets lost their first free agent last night, but it won’t be the last.

Defensive end Mike DeVito fled for the Chiefs, agreeing to a three-year, $12.6 million deal with the team, according to a source.

The Jets had hoped to re-sign DeVito, a key piece of their defensive line, but they could not compete with that offer. The Jets also released Sione Po’uha yesterday, according to a source, so the team lost two veteran members of that group.

DeVito is one of seven Jets starters from last year who became free agents yesterday. New general manager John Idzik has not re-signed any of the team’s unrestricted free agents.

In Kansas City, DeVito will be reunited with longtime Jets assistant Bob Sutton, who is the new Chiefs defensive coordinator. DeVito played for the Jets from 2006-12, becoming a starter in 2010.

* The Jets have lined up two visits with free agents. The team will meet with wide receiver Brandon Gibson today, according to a source. They will also meet with running back Mike Goodson, according to a source, but it was unclear when.

Gibson scored two touchdowns against the Jets as a member of the Rams last season. He had 51 receptions for 691 yards and five touchdowns last season. The source said the Jets have a “strong” interest in Gibson. He is also being pursued by the other AFC East teams — the Patriots, Bills and Dolphins.

Goodson spent the 2012 season with the Raiders after starting his career with the Panthers. He rushed for 221 yards on 35 carries and no touchdowns last year in Oakland.

The Jets could lose starting running back Shonn Greene in free agency.

* The Jets have expressed interest in free agent quarterback Jason Campbell, according to a source. Campbell spent last year as the backup for the Bears. … The team informed free agent WR Braylon Edwards they would like to bring him back, but want to explore some other options as well, according to a source. … Free agent safety LaRon Landry is visiting the Colts today, according to a source. He has three other visits lined up if he does not sign with Indianapolis.

The Jets hope to re-sign free agent guard Matt Slauson, according to a source, but they have some competition. The Giants, Cowboys and Raiders are all interested in Slauson as well. … The Bears are the top suitor for free agent guard Brandon Moore. If Moore and linebacker Bryan Thomas depart as free agents, the Jets will have no players left from the Herm Edwards era, which ended in 2005. Center Nick Mangold and tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson (both drafted in 2006) would be the longest-tenured players on the team.
