SUNY trustees vote to close down Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital – again

The State University of New York board of trustees has once again voted to shut down Brooklyn’s Long Island College Hospital.

SUNY wants to close the Cobble Hill hospital because it loses money, but doctors’ and nurses’ groups have fought to keep it open.

Last week, a Brooklyn judge ordered that SUNY had violated open meeting laws and that the closure could not move forward until those laws were followed.

About 120 healthcare workers and community residents drove to SUNY Purchase today to attend the open meeting and re-vote.

“I think it’s another mistake that SUNY is making. It’s a mistake because they have failed at the central issue, which is how to operate the hospital efficiently,” said Herdley Hill, 55, a registered nurse at LICH and a NYS Nurses Assocation leader.

A SUNY spokesman said the hospital loses about $1 million every week.

“The Board of Trustees today took the difficult but necessary step of supporting the decision to close Long Island College Hospital,” said spokesman David Doyle. “This is the latest of many actions needed to stabilize the finances of Downstate Medical Center and preserve its 8,000 jobs and Brooklyn’s only medical school.”
