PSAL girls basketball rankings

This week will not be a very good indication of the rest of the season. There wasn’t a single change with the season still coming to a boil.

So far, the chalk picks have held up. No. 2 South Shore and No. 5 McKee/Staten Island Tech beat No. 7 Midwood this week and No. 4 Francis Lewis took down No. 8 John F. Kennedy. Game to watch this week? MSIT-Manhattan Center on Thursday. That one will be pivotal for rankings and seeding purposes.

1. Murry Bergtraum (3-0) (Last week: 1)

The 11-time defending PSAL city champions cruised through the first week of the season. This week will be a bit more challenging. Bergtraum visits rival Manhattan Center on Monday. It’ll be the first time the two teams play since the Rams snapped the Lady Blazers’ 73-game winning streak last season.

Next: @ No. 6 Manhattan Center (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

2. South Shore (2-0) (2)

The young Vikings looked strong last week in a 70-44 rout of Midwood. Coach Anwar Gladden’s kiddie corps beat Cardozo by just 10 points the next day, though. It’s going to be one of those seasons for South Shore, which features a plethora of sophomores and star freshman Aliyah Cooley.

Next: Banneker (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

3. Thomas Jefferson (1-0) (3)

The new era of Orange Wave girls basketball gets a first challenge Monday against Midwood. The Hornets will be depleted without star center Jewel Tunstull, who is out with a hip injury, but it will still be interesting to see what Alicia Cropper, Danielle Pearson and company do against a solid team.

Next: No. 7 Midwood (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

4. Francis Lewis (3-0) (4)

Coach Steve Tsai sat stars Kelly Robinson and Sabrina Jeridore early in the Patriots’ game against John F. Kennedy after the pair arrived late to LIU. Lewis played well in their absence and controlled Kennedy throughout Sunday’s game. Tatiana Wilson and Ayana Duncanson seem poised for big seasons.

Next: @ Grand Street Campus (Dec. 10, 5 p.m.)

5. McKee/S.I. Tech (4-0) (5)

Kelin Walsh looked like one of the best freshmen in the PSAL on Sunday in Tech’s win against Midwood. She scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter as Midwood attempted to come back. Add her to Kristen Markoe, Kaitlyn Astel and Alicea Ulmer and we could be talking about a deep playoff run for the Sea Gulls.

Next: Port Richmond (Dec. 7, 6 p.m.)

6. Manhattan Center (1-0) (6)

The Rams are Aziza Patterson’s team and it didn’t take long for her to be challenged as a point guard and team leader. Manhattan Center plays rival and 11-time defending PSAL city champion Bergtraum on Monday. It’s a tough week for Center, which travels to No. 5 McKee/Staten Island Tech on Thursday in a matchup with serious rankings implications.

Next: No. 1 Murry Bergtraum (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

7. Midwood (1-2) (7)

It might be early, but this is not a good time for Midwood to be playing without star center Jewel Tunstull, who is sidelined with a hip injury. She didn’t compete in losses to South Shore and McKee/Staten Island Tech and she probably won’t play against Jefferson on Monday. The Northeastern-bound senior could be ready Thursday when Midwood meets Moore Catholic.

Next: @ No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

8. John F. Kennedy (2-1) (8)

Last week’s near-loss against Truman was ugly, but Kennedy showed it could compete against the PSAL’s best in a loss to Francis Lewis in the PSAL Tip-Off Classic on Sunday. Sophomores Deaisia Acklin, Chelsea Custodio, Sarah Vann and Leshauna Phinazee have plenty of potential.

Next: Lehman (Dec. 7, 5 p.m.)

9. West 50th Street Campus (4-0) (9)

The team formerly known as Food and Finance returned a nice core from last year’s trip to the PSAL Class A final, but a freshman – Abbie Etuk – actually leads the Seawolves in scoring (11.7 points per game). It’s only a matter of time before 6-foot-4 center Justine Perry becomes a dominant player inside.

Next: Wadleigh (Dec. 8, 4:30 p.m.)

10. Medgar Evers (2-0) (10)

Coach Barney Davis said in the preseason that freshman Camera Miley would lead his team in scoring. He clearly wasn’t joking. Miley is averaging a team-high 12 points per game in what has been a pretty balanced offense thus far.

Next: Brooklyn Tech (Dec. 7, 4:30 p.m.)

New: None

Dropped out: None

On the bubble: Wings (3-0), Boys & Girls (1-1), Tottenville (2-0) and Lincoln (1-1)
