Tom Brokaw OK after car crash on Bruckner Expressway

Veteran newsman Tom Brokaw and his wife miraculously escaped a horrific, fatal, car crash that unfolded one car in front of them in The Bronx this afternoon, authorities and his spokesperson said.

The tragic smashup occurred around 1 p.m. on the Bruckner Expressway near the Sheridan Expressway and shut down the stretch of highway for hours, cops said.

Tom and Meredith Brokaw were traveling in far left lane of the Brucker when they noticed a spool of cable bouncing near the right lane, said a statement issued by Brokaw’s rep.

A woman driving a green SUV ahead of them swerved to avoid the cable and lost control of her car, forcing a US Postal Service truck into the Brokaws’ lane of traffic. With the truck barreling toward the Brokaws’ car, the newsman hit the brakes and skidded along the median while both the postal truck and SUV overturned.

An unidentified Hispanic woman in her 30s was flung from the SUV and landed on the train tracks underneath the Willis Avenue Bridge. She was pronounced dead at the scene, cops said.

“Tom and Meredith are greatly saddened by this loss of life,” said a flak for the newsman and his wife in a statement issued this afternoon.
