CHSAA/Independent girls basketball roundup: Smith leads CK past Kearney

Bria Smith and Christ the King had a bounce-back performance after its loss to Bishop Ford last Monday.

Smith, who scored just four points against the Falcons, poured in a team-high 25 in the Royals’ 77-61 win over visiting Bishop Kearney in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens girls basketball Monday night. Ariel Edwards scored 17 points and Jackie Michel had 10 for CK (2-1).

Taylor Raccuglia dropped in 24 points and Sam Retas had 13 for Kearney (3-2), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. Meaghan McGoorty scored 12 points, but was kept out of the first quarter after coming back late from a college visit to SUNY Albany on Saturday and missed the Tigers’ win over St. Dominic.

Christ the King leaves Thursday for the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz., and will meet Dillard (Fla.), previously ranked No. 13 in the country by USA Today, in the opening round Friday. The Royals will play either No. 3 Bolingbrook (Ill.) or No. 21 Long Beach Poly (Calif.), which just knocked off St. Michael Academy, in the next round Saturday.

Stella Maris 44, Catherine McAuley 25: Jennifer Miller scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Stella Maris (1-2) in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division II. Alison McGovern added seven points. Jasmine Wynder had 12 points for McAuley (0-2).

St. Edmund Prep 50, St. Agnes 28: Cassandra Molinari scored 16 points to lead St. Edmund (1-0). Catherine Loppe had six points and eight rebounds and Ariel Brizard had eight points. Jenny Russo added four points and eight rebounds. St. Agnes is 0-1.

NON-LEAGUE

Riverdale 50, Chapin 28: Chelsea Baez dropped in 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Tori Goodell had10 points and five rebounds for Riverdale (4-0). Rachel Copulsky had six points, five rebounds and five assists.
