Mets lose out to Brewers in pursuit of Wolf

The Mets lost out on a free-agent pitcher they were interested in, as Randy Wolf is headed to the Brewers for a three-year deal that nets him $29 million.

The 33-year-old lefty excelled this past season with the Dodgers, posting the second-best ERA of his career, behind a 3.20 mark with the Phillies in 2002.

Not only do the Mets lose out on a potential target, they could battle Wolf and the Brewers for a wild-card spot. The Mets and Brewers, who have former Mets manager Willie Randolph and former Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson on their coaching staff, competed for a playoff spot until the final day of the 2008 season. Both teams finished last season below .500.

The Yankees may now have to face Kevin Millwood a bit more. The veteran right-hander was shipped from the Rangers to the Orioles for reliever Chris Ray and a player to be named later. The Orioles also got cash in the deal.

The Mets had shown interest in Millwood, but Texas wasn’t interested in taking second baseman Luis Castillo.

Millwood, who turns 35 later this month, went 13-10 with a 3.67 ERA this past season. His move to the AL East might be good for the Yankees — they battered him to a 6.35 ERA in two games this past season, while Millwood went 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA in three starts versus the Red Sox.

The Rangers and righty Rich Harden last night reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year contract that guarantees him $7.5 million.

Also, Texas and Red Sox reached preliminary agreement on a trade that will send Mike Lowell to Texas for catcher/first baseman Max Ramirez, FOXSports.com. reported.

Former Mets relievers were in the news yesterday. The Marlins were shipping Matt Lindstrom to the Astros for two minor leaguers and a Rule 5 Draft pick, pending physicals. And J.J. Putz, whom the Mets acquired from Seattle during last year’s Winter Meetings, reportedly was to throw for teams yesterday and again tomorrow.
