Aussie reporter delivers Braveheart-inspired snow update

Here’s what normally happens on your official daily snow report from a major Australian ski resort.

Some chirpy young thing spins a bunch of dodgy resort spin about how awesome the snow is, when in reality, the majority of the mountain is mud and grass.

Now here’s what happened at the Victorian ski resort of Mt Buller yesterday. A snow reporter was honest. He was actually honest, and said there was extremely limited snow coverage.

But that’s only half of what makes this snow report video so excellent. Snow reporter Chris Morecroft was hilarious – delivering a Braveheart-style rant in a thick, almost indecipherable Scottish accent.

As Morecroft – or “McMorecroft” as he called himself – said:

“Mother nature may try and take away our snow, BUT SHE WILL NEVER TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOM!!!

Eat your heart out, Mel Gibson.

For those who find the Scottish accent a wee bit tricky to translate, here’s the full text of Chris Morecroft’s report:

“Chris McMorecroft here with the Mt Buller snow report for this Tuesday the 17th of September, and I stand before you on Bourke St [a Mt Buller run] in open defiance of Mother Nature and her willingness to try and wash away our snow. But to her I say ‘we still have six lifts turnin’ with discount lift tickets, we still have lessons available and we still have Skyline Terrain Park’, so to those of you who would sit at home and go ‘ohhh nooo, the weather’s not to me likin’ I say ‘harden up’ and to those who say ‘ohhh, but there’s holes in the snow’ I say ‘go around them’ ‘cos in weeks to come when you’re swelterin’ away in the summer heat, do you want to say ‘oh I sat at home and it was lovely’ or do you want to be able to say that you skied until the last man skied, until the snow was almost completely gone, because Mother Nature may try and take away our snow, but she will never take away our freedom.”

Passionate stuff, eh? Makes you want go skiing, no? Or, you know, repel the evil English invaders. Either option could work nicely.

For those inspired by Chris’s passion, Mt Buller will stay open till Sunday. Above is a picture of how it more or less looks at the moment. Below is how it could look if the centimetre or two of snow forecast this week is multiplied by about 1100.

The really good news is, you score a free lift ticket if you turn up wearing footy colors or if you have a Holden key (Holden is one of the resort’s major sponsors).

The question is, will you take the high road or the low road to get there?
