Ed Fountaine’s Stakes Spot Plays

Honey Fox

Gulfstream Park, 10th race. Grade 2. Purse: $150,000. 1 mile, turf, fillies and mares. Post: 5:35 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Pianist looked like she was on the verge of becoming a superstar on the turf last summer, but then she twice finished fourth in turf stakes at 4-5. Given the winter off, the daughter of More Than Ready returned with a sparking victory for Chad Brown over this course, at this distance. She looks ready to pick up where she left off last year.

AZERI

Oaklawn Park, ninth race. Grade 3. Purse: $150,000. 1 1/16 miles, fillies and mares. Post: 6:13 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
My Miss Aurelia, the 2-year-old filly champ of 2011, was undefeated until finishing second giving supermare Royal Delta a tussle in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, then she was run off her feet through a brutal pace (:44, 1:08 4/5) shortening up to seven furlongs in the La Brea and still was beaten just a half-length. The 4-year-old daughter of Smart Strike’s recent works for her return have the clockers nodding in approval.

REBEL

Oaklawn Park, 10th race. Grade 2. Purse: $600,000. 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-olds. Post: 6:48 p.m.

LOWDOWN:
Super Ninety Nine is 2-for-2 after Bob Baffert stretched him out to two turns, including an 11-length romp in the Southwest, at this distance, in the slop over this track. The son of Pulpit has enough early speed to overcome his outside post 10, and his most dangerous opponent, Delhomme, hasn’t raced since Nov. 24.
