Damon gets deal in Detroit

TAMPA — According to a source close to the situation former Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon has agreed to a one-year deal with Detroit.

The deal, believed to be in the $8 million range, is contingent on Damon passing a physical.

Damon, who was a Yankee the last four years, turned down a two-year pact worth $14 million from the club in December.

Damon, 35, is a career .288 hitter with 207 home runs, 996 RBIs and 374 stolen bases over his 15-year career with the Royals, Athletics, Red Sox and Yankees. A two-time All-Star (once with the Yankees), Damon hit .285 with 77 home runs, 296 RBIs and 93 stolen bases in his four years in The Bronx.

He arguably had his best season in pinstripes last year, hitting .282 with 24 homers and 82 RBIs as the team’s No. 2 hitter. He excelled in last year’s playoffs, hitting .300 in the ALCS and .364 in the World Series.
