Jordan Matter’s amazing ‘Athletes Among Us’

Photographer Jordan Matter, whose portraits of dancers twirling on subway cars and city streets became the best-selling book “Dancers Among Us,” has turned his focus to sports stars for “Athletes Among Us” (athletesamongus.com). Here, former Jets safety Erik Coleman surprises shoppers at a Rockland County supermarket.

Former Jets safety Erik Coleman and his wife nearly broke the bed for this shot. “We had to stop. Every time it got a little bit closer to breaking it and then that final one you heard the real springs crunch and then we had to stop,” Matter said.

No photoshopping here — gymnast Jackie Carlson really did climb the light pole at Sixth Avenue and 14th Street. After two poses, she had to stop. “She was unable to do it anymore, it was so difficult,” Matter said.
