JFK, LaGuardia airports to get full-body scans next month

Controversial full-body scanners that display naked images of airline passengers are coming to the city’s three-area airports next month, officials announced today.

Susan Baer, director of aviation at the Port Authority, said the scanners would be installed at Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports in September, The Newark Star-Ledger reported today.

The TSA said the scanners would arrive as part of batch of 450 being shipped around the country by the end of this year.

It remains unclear how many scanners each airport will get.

Nearly 50 of the country’s airports are already equipped with the new technology, which is intended to enhance security at airport checkpoints.

The machines are touted as more effective at protecting passengers from a potential terror attack compared to current metal detectors, although many have argued that it is an invasion of privacy.
