‘MOMS’ KNOWS BEST
Whoopi Goldberg says the comedienne who was a huge inspiration to her was Jackie “Moms” Mabley (right), who got her start on the “chitlin’ circuit,” as black vaudeville was known back in the day. Born Loretta Mary Aiken in Brevard, NC, Moms was the first female comedian to play the Apollo Theater before moving on to Carnegie Hall and primetime variety shows such as “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “The Smothers Brothers ComedyHour” and “The Bill Cosby Show.” Her monologues were clever, with a political edge, and in this special, many talents of Moms’ day talk about her wit and pioneering spirit. The lineup is pretty great: Harry Belafonte, Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, Quincy Jones, Joan Rivers and Sidney Poitier.

SHALL WE DANCE?
Masters (Michael Sheen) and Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) decide that the best way to record their study findings is to film them, but to do so, they have to enlist some outside help. Meanwhile, the unhappy Mrs. Masters (Caitlin Fitzgerald, left) amuses herself by teaching herself how to dance. A hunky handyman who’s cleaning out the gutters (Flex Alexander, right) interrupts the lesson to give her some pointers. And after Margaret (Allison Janney) catches him meeting his trick, Scully (Beau Bridges) takes steps to control his impulses.
