CUNY gives Kushner honor

The executive committee of the City University Board of Trustees yesterday approved a disputed honorary degree for playwright Tony Kushner.

Approval of the award from John Jay College came four days after the full board had voted to delay the matter at the request of trustee Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, a former assistant to Gov. George Pataki.

He had expressed concern about what he called Kushner’s unfair criticism of Israel.

Wiesenfeld said last night he stands by his opposition. He claims Kushner had gone further than most critics of Israel by bemoaning its creation and accusing it of ethnic cleansing.

Reps for Kushner didn’t return an e-mail seeking comment.
