Crunched: Big apple crime stats

The Issue: Whether the rise in crime in New York City is due to under-policing or over-reporting.

“Apple Crime up 4 Percent,” (June 20) details how crime is up in every New York borough for the first time in nearly 20 years and the four main factors contributing to the spike.

A “law-enforcement source” is later quoted as saying: “Cops don’t want to get in trouble, so they take a report on everything now.”

The dramatic increase seems to be more in the reporting of felonies than in their commission.

The way officers are scrutinized for just about every action they take is cause for concern.

The department can do as many stop-and frisk-training sessions as it wants, but it will never compare to actual involvement on the street.

I can’t blame the police officers who do just enough to get by.
