Cool! Storm breaks heat

A severe thunderstorm that aimed a bolt at the antenna atop the Empire State Building yesterday broke the back of the grueling, three-day heat wave.

The rainstorm hit between 2 and 3 p.m. “and it cooled Central Park down to 74 degrees from at least 90 at 2 p.m.,’’ said AccuWeather.com’s Dave Samuhel.

Yesterday afternoon, Con Ed said it was working to restore service to about 2,600 customers, including 740 in Brooklyn and 240 in Queens, who lost power as a result of the heat.

On Staten Island, about 550 customers suffered outages due to downed wires.
