Cops rooting out ‘community gun’ caches

The NYPD is cracking down on a disturbing uptick in gun-sharing among city thugs.

Weapons are often hidden in trash cans, under porches and in back yards so that no one will be held responsible if cops find the weapons, officials said yesterday.

The Staten Island DA and NYPD have started a Cash for Stash pilot program, which will reward $200 to people who tell cops the location of community guns.

Staten Island DA Daniel Donovan said the term “communal gun” is “a terrible” term.

“All they do is tear the communities apart,” he said. “Stash guns also pose a threat to residents who may stumble upon it. A child looking for a ball in a bush may come across this community gun.

“Simply pulling a trigger is all it takes to ruin a life forever.”

Officials are also concerned about a practice known as the “Bronx bounce” or “Brooklyn bounce,” in which criminals drop a gun during a chase and someone else picks it up before pursuing officers can grab it.
