Car hits wall in The Bronx, killing driver

An out-of-control car crashed completely through the brick wall of a Bronx building today — killing the 49-year-old driver and badly injuring his 30-year-old female passenger, cops said.

“It sounded like someone had set off some dynamite,” said Vanessa Brown, who lives close to the crash site at 1649 Overing St. in Westchester Square. “All you could see was just white smoke.”

Cops said Gilbert Alfonso was driving his Honda Accord westbound on East Tremont Avenue just before 1 a.m. when he lost control as he apparently attempted a left turn onto Overing, police said.

His car then struck the two-story building on the corner — ending up inside structure’s ground floor, which houses retail stores, cops said.

“It was horrific” said neighbor Daisy Fahie.

Motorcyclists inside a tattoo shop next door scrambled to try to help the two people inside the Honda, witnesses said.

Alfononso, who a little more than a mile from the crash scene, was pronounce dead on arrival at Jacobi Hospital. His unidentified female passenger was listed in stabile condition there, police said.

Six families who live in apartments on the second floor were ordered to evacuate as the Buildings Department investigates the stability of the structure.
